Help Afghan Women and Girls Pursue Their Dreams and Access Education

Following the resurgence of the Taliban regime, the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, especially for Afghan women and girls.

According to UNICEF, the number of people in need in Afghanistan increased to 30 million people in 2023, the majority being women and girls. Despite the catastrophic humanitarian situation, Afghanistan is edging closer to being forgotten by most of the world.

When the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, they pledged to respect women’s rights. Since then, women have been ousted from most professions and barred from attending universities or higher education institutions. In July 2023, beauty salons were banned, eliminating the last places where Afghan women could gather and be free in private.

These draconian measures are to push women out of the public eye and severely limit their freedom of movement.

When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan between 1996 to 2001, they were known for their degrading treatment of women. Afghan women were forced to wear the burqa in public, could not pursue an education or work in a public capacity, and were not allowed to leave the house without a male escort or be seen by male doctors.

The same restrictive measures have returned with Afghan women losing not only their freedom but the right to pursue an education which serves as a lifeline to hope and their dreams.

For Afghanistan to stand on its own feet, women and girls must be educated. They must be allowed to work and participate in public life, not hidden behind shrouded windows and locked doors.

Women in Afghanistan stress that the world should not stand idly by. They need the support and solidarity of the world community to survive.
